The One Thing To Change Your 2018

We could all use the same thing this new year. Whether you’re old or young, married or single, a believer in Jesus (like me) or not, adventurous or boring (no offense), try this first. Whether you…

Moving On from GA Bitmaker

After 4.5 years of empowering students, growing the tech scene, building a great team (and some cool tools), and working with amazing people at Bitmaker and General Assembly, it’s time for me to move on to a new challenge. I’ve accepted a Senior Dev position on the internal tools team at Shopify. My last day will be Jan 12, 2017.

I started teaching at Bitmaker at the beginning of the second cohort in 2013. I have always believed that anyone could learn the skills I use every day in my career. Beyond that, there was a major need for more people from diverse backgrounds in tech. As I’ve said in many first day presentations, there’s no magic to learning web development. It simply requires tons of curiosity and hard work. We’ve proven that thoroughly over the years and I’m privileged to have been a part of it.

There are few jobs where you can meet great people and make a real, impactful difference in their lives on a daily basis. In my early days at Bitmaker, my benchmark for success was when students starting with no experience in tech became peers at work. It’s so fulfilling that we’ve had the privilege of experiencing that many times over at this point!

I’m excited to join the Shopify team, several of whom are Bitmaker alumni, to face interesting new technical and mentorship challenges. I’m looking forward to growing and learning from the deep pool of talented people at Shopify.

Given the team that’s in place I’m super confident that things are going to continue growing at GA Bitmaker. It’s time to give others the opportunity to steer the ship. Natalie Black (my partner-in-crime for the past several years) and Daniel Moniz are stepping into the leadership roles on the web dev team. We’re working together to solidify their roles and responsibilities going forward.

I won’t be completely gone; I’m shifting into an occasional instructor role, doing lessons periodically.

I’m very proud of all that we’ve achieved together at GA Bitmaker, both staff and students, over the past four and a half years. We’ve played a part in strengthening the tech ecosystem, increasing the diversity of talent, helping people change their careers and their lives, turning strangers into friends and friends into co-workers.
