Fire Smoked Mao

It is said that the Chairman/founder of People’s Republic of China, Mao Tse Tung, was rather fond of a provincial dish called “Fire Smoked Fish,” which was regularly served to celebrate his birthdays. Without a doubt, Mao was the most powerful man ever in Asia during the 20th century. He, along with his blue-collar peasants, had overthrown the government made of Chinese elites, Republic of China, which was forced to change their base to an isle called Taiwan.

Further, Mao denied the Russian communists any involvement in the discourse of China’s domestic politics in order to preserve China’s autonomy. Because Mao did not want to repeat the example made by Dr. Sun-Yet-Set and Jiang-Kei-Shek, who had strategically sought Western allies to help them fight the Qing Monarchy as well as the wars against Japan. As a result, Western powers had been given a hegemonic voice to determine China domestic policies so China would have turned America’s neo-colony, if without the Communist Revolution in 1949. Russia went away and took off all the equipment, which was intended to help China with their nuclear and space technologies. Without the help of Russia, Mao urged the Chinese to do all that alone, all by themselves. Alone, with tens of millions of other Chinese people killed in repeated experiments. Such amazing success was literally written in tears and blood.

There has been great controversy concerning Mao, especially the Cultural Revolution initiated in 1968. Was he good? Was he evil? He was literally the only Asian power figure, who stood on his own feet without any foreign aid, unlike Japan and Korea who rely on American or Russian powers to sit and stand. In this aspect, Mao is quite a great man who had lived up to the idea of national self-determination and made China a truthfully independent country. However, Mao’s fight to seize power also got many irrelevant people killed, intellectuals tortured and lots of historic sites and treasures destroyed.

Now in 2018, the Chinese government is doing the worst they can to marginalize Taiwan, whom Mao regarded as not significant enough to continue the fight after his glorious conquest of the entire Chinese continent. Which is why Taiwan remains till this day because Mao did not give us a damn then. In Mao’s mind, he prioritized the thousands of millions of Chinese to small Taiwan.

Obviously, Taiwan, as a “country”, is placed right at the bottom, invisible and immobile, and can never be part of the UN or properly included in the international platform. People in Taiwan have to seek exceptional space within the margins of the international laws to make their trades so they can survive and prosper despite Taiwan’s lack of visibility.
In this piece “Fire Smoked Mao”, Mao is being consumed by Taiwan-bred Tilapia, a fish product derived from the margin. Behind that five yellow communist stars, the blood of Mao’s head is on fire as he is fried and smoked like his favorite dish. However, Mao endures the pain, rises above as he lets his blood fill up the continent of PRC: Mao takes it like a man and continues being a manfish god in The Affective Dimension of Veronique Kwak.
