An education of my own

What?

Freire explains the relationship between practice theory and knowledge need each other. “Without practice there’s knowledge” (pg, 97). This quote states that there is a correlation between the two and they are needed to make the other is difficult to know things without practice. I would not be able to drive well without having months of practice and experience. Paulo talks about having to get the knowledge that people know about how they know. “To understand the way, they speak” (pg. 98). I have this one class that I am taking this semester, debate, where I have used this strategy a lot. I used to be very shy and timid when having to present in front of a classroom, but with debate, I have become more comfortable with this. I can even now think in my toes for information. Normally I would have a list of information that I would be presenting on. Now I can think faster and change my plan, which happens a lot during debate, I am not always going to say everything I wrote down and prepared.

So What?

Myles does not believe in neutrality because it does not have its own meaning. He believes that neutrality is “just being what the system asks us to be” (pg. 102). Paulo believes that neutrality is the best way for people to hide their choices. He also gives the example of the biology teacher. Paulo says, “it is impossible for education to be neutral, educators have to confront some practical problems” (pg. 104).

Now What?

My community partners have helped with my education in that I am helping other students learn. I do not want to be a teacher but in going to law school I will be helping people with their lives and that is what my passion is. I want to help people fight for what is right. I feel that helping these young kids with their homework is helping them fight for what is right in their lives. They have the right to education and to learn. I feel that I am helping them learn in different ways and making sure they have a good understanding of what they are learning. I am learning patience with the kids. Sometimes they want to take the easy way out and I have to be patient but strict with them and tell them that they need to push themselves a little further.
