An ode to George Floyd.

I wish I could worship you
As my new Messiah —
With my lips, the little bit of breath
In my lungs — in your sweat
And in your tears — I wish to be baptized
Crying out with the little bit of breath I have
“I love you”, “I love you”, “I love you”.

Somebody loved that man, George — Just like I love you. Just like you love somebody. Just like they love somebody else.

We like to believe that death is far away.
We’re eternally too young to die.
Certainly, it’d be the most unlikely to be murdered
Or martyred — in a modern day crucifixion.

We shouldn’t need to riot.
We shouldn’t need to burn a whole city down
In flames, battling rubber bullets and tear gas
Just to find for our man the most minute bit of justice.

Why isn’t justice built into the walls of every police station, of every courthouse, and of every government building? Justice shouldn’t be flammable, so why must we ignite flames to find it?

Why is it that as a society, we must riot and loot for justice — and for equality?

From Stonewall to today
Until our leaders care enough about us to listen —
Without extensive action

Nothing will change.
