Software Craftsmanship Conference 2018

Yesterday was the day that the SCNA was held in NYC. It was a day-long conference bringing together the thought leaders of software craftsmanship, who shared their knowledge with people who want to grow in their craft.
I was very happy that I got to be a volunteer and hear the various talks that were held.
There were so many interesting discussions, it was hard to choose just one for this week’s blog post, but the one that aligned with my Apprenticeship journey was Sam Jones’ talk on “Javascript Is Too Convenient”, as it gave good tips on how to write more easy to understand code.
There were three topics during this talk that helped me better understand how to improve my skillset, irrespective of the programming language being used:
1) Code should communicate intent. When someone is reading your code, that person should be able to understand what you are seeking to do without you having to personally explain it to them. The code should explain itself.
2) Give confusing things names. This can happen with good method names that explain the behavior of those lines of code. This can also happen with good variable names that explain their purpose.
3) Tests are documentation. Tests are a good way of explaining how the code should function under well-defined conditions.

Can’t wait for the next one!
