Born Daood Gilani to an American mother and Pakistani father in Washington D.C., he would change his name to David Headley many years later to sound more American.
Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Pakistan. His mother missed home so she went back to the US leaving Headley with his father.
Living with his mom in Philadelphia he attempted to resume his military schooling but it didn’t last. He married and divorced for the first time before moving to New York City to open a video rental place.
Headley regularly traveled to Pakistan while living in the US. He also developed a heroin addiction. While in Pakistan he met and became friendly with traffickers.
Headley was caught in possession of the drug in Pakistan but was never charged. He would not be so lucky on one of his return trips to Philadelphia.
After his release, he continued to sell drugs but stopped using them. In 1997 he was arrested after being caught trying to smuggle drugs out of Pakistan and into the US.
