By: Aya Cathey

Women In Politics, BBC.com

Greta Thunberg is a 16-year-old Swedish student and climate activist. She defines herself as a messenger and catalyst in the climate crisis revolution. In August 2018, Greta began a school strike demanding action against climate change outside of the Swedish Parliament. Today, her movement, Friday’s for the Future, has a following of over 100, 000 students and 2.8 million followers on Instagram. She hopes to inspire people to make small differences in their communities and educate those who do not believe in the detrimental effects the climate crisis is having on the environment.

Greta inspires younger generations to amplify their voice and platform and to create radical change. To read more about her journey, follow her on Instagram and twitter @gretathunberg and hashtag #FridaysForFuture.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg, May 2019 from CNN.com

In August 1993, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was sworn in as America’s 107th Supreme Court justice and second female justice on the U.S. court. She was born to a Jewish immigrant family and was the first of her generation to attend college, graduating from both Columbia University and Harvard Law School. She is notorious for being a powerful symbol of feminism in her male-dominated workforce and continues to pave the way for women in leadership. RBG is known for her active voice and dissenting opinions involving gender discrimination, voting rights, college admission equity, and equal pay. In the early 1970s, Ginsburg litigated gender-equality cases as director of the Women’s Rights Project at the ACLU. In 1972, she received tenure at Columbia Law School, becoming the school’s first tenured female professor. Now at 86 years old, Ginsburg has led a phenomenal career and beaten pancreatic cancer, proving she will outlive us all.

In 2007, Pelosi was elected the first woman to serve as U.S. Speaker of the House. In 2013, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the American women’s rights movement. Working in partnership with President Obama, Speaker Pelosi passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to create and save millions of American jobs and provide a tax cut to 95 percent of working Americans. “She’ll cut your head off, and you won’t even know you’re bleeding,” her daughter Alexandra Pelosi told CNN when asked about her mom’s reelection to Speaker. “That’s all you need to know about her. No one ever won betting against Nancy Pelosi. She’s persevered.”
