The first malaria vaccine launched in Africa

Malaria is a life threatening parasite disease caused by parasites Plasmodium viviax, Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale, transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito. According to WHO it remains one the world’s leading killer, claiming the life of one child every two minutes. Most of these deaths are occurring in Africa.

India ranks very high in the list of countries with serious malaria burden. As per National Borne Disease Control Programme 3,99,134 cases of malaria were registered and 85 death were reported. But in India private doctors, most of whom do not such notify cases. Thus, it is highly probable that above mentioned number will go higher.

What is malaria vaccine?

The vaccine has been created by GSK in 1987, and was subsequently developed with the support from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2014, vaccine cleared phase III clinical trails which certified that it was both effective and safe for use in humans.

The pilot has already been started in Malawi and subsequently will extend to Kenya and Ghana. The vaccine will be given in four doses;three doses between 5 and 9 months of age, and the fourth dose around the child’s second birthday.
