Populism is a Symptom of Failed Educational Systems.

All around the world we have seen populists taking over governments. Trump, Bolsonaro, Erdogan and Putin are representing a generation of politicians opposing liberal ideas and globalisation.

I keep hearing claims of people not being interested in politics while seeing highly politized confrontations on social media. The people that proudly admit to never watch the news are the same folks spitting out one political statement after the other on their feeds without even noticing it.

Disenchantment with politics caused the rise of populist leaders all around the world. Most of these governments got elected in a more or less democratic process, some of them took power by using dirty tricks.

The bottom line is that these politicians enjoy genuine support from their voters. All of them are dealing with angry oppositions, but none of them came to power as a following of a bloody revolution or similar.

While the media is focussing on the authoritarian traits of the Trump administration, they seem to miss out on the fact that he had around 50 Million citizens vote for him in 2016. Putin might not be a flawless democratic leader, but a majority of Russians actually like his politics. Bolsonaro can be attacked for many shortcomings in handling the Covid-19 crisis, but we have to acknowledge that he is very popular among his voters.

Democracy is the rule of the majority even if that means acting irrationally at times. The voice of an uneducated farmer from Alabama counts just as much as the vote of a political scientist teaching at Harvard.

I am not an advocate of belittling voters in rural areas, but I am worried about them getting tricked into supporting populist movements.
